Applying to 42 Coding School 1
Applying to 42 Coding School
🏫

Teacher free, grade free, and most important tuition free

After researching multiple ways to learn to code, I found something rather interesting — and it’s even FREE!

This school was originally created in France, and since then it has expanded to many campuses worldwide. I just so happen to be living in Tokyo, and the campus is only a couple of stations away from me. So I looked into it and decided to apply.

Application & Initial Requirements

There is a two-step process prior to entering:

  • Engineer Aptitude Test
  • Piscine

Engineer Aptitude Test

These are the first steps and are completed remotely. It typically takes about two hours and is composed of two parts: a memory game and a logic game. No prior programming skills are required to pass these tests, as they focus on cognitive and problem-solving abilities.

Memory Test

Logic Game

I didn’t really know what to expect from these first steps in the application process.

I can confidently admit that I failed on my first try. However, you’re allowed to take this test as many times as you want. After researching more about the school and what they expect, or better yet, what you should expect from the school. I learned that the primary language they teach is C. It’s the first language students learn, and these tests are meant to measure logical thinking and calibrate where you currently stand.

Second time's a charm

During my first attempt, I was going in circles, banging my head, and just not getting it. It was very frustrating, but fun at the same time. I got stuck at level 5 during my first run, but on my second attempt I managed to reach level 10. I’m not sure how many levels there are in total, but I assume quite a lot. These are puzzles, after all, and many people can solve them without any coding knowledge.

I assume the sweet spot for passing is somewhere around level 8 or higher.

The Follow Up

After completing the initial application games, it takes about 24 to 48 hours to receive confirmation on whether you passed or failed.

I am currently in the phase where acceptance into the actual school is being decided.

Introduction Meeting

In the confirmation email, they ask you to register for the next Introduction Meeting. I believe these are held weekly or bi-weekly.

"Piscine"

My Introduction Meeting will be on January 17th. At that point, I’ll receive more information about what comes next, which will be the "Piscine."

The word "Piscine" is French for “pool” (as in swimming).

This is a four-week entry exam. Students will have four weeks to complete it, all while learning and helping each other along the way.
